A few words before we begin...
- Microsoft states (and I concur) that installing and running multiple versions of Office on one system is NOT recommended. It CAN be done and operate correctly with certain applications.
- Only ONE version of Outlook can run on any system. Period.
- Only ONE version of Access should be run on any system. It is possible to run more than one version on any system but you WILL have problems, promise...
- Word and Excel will run concurrent with other versions if you choose.
- Upgrading does NOT affect your data. All your files will still be there
A Typical Installation
You will begin the installation upgrade in One of Two ways, by 1) Autorun or 2) by Browsing the CD and selecting the setup.exe executable file. My instructions will be using 1) Autorun. I will also be giiving instructions for the Professional (PRO) version of Office 2000.
- Insert the first disk, CD 1.
- It should start the setup window automatically, or "Autorun"
- Type in your Name, Company Name (if any), and Product ID when instructed. If you don't have a product ID, call Microsoft or the manufacturer of your system!
- Accept the default folder for installation. The file path is normally C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
- For installation type select "Typical"
- You should receive the following message:
The Microsoft Office Upgrade Wizard has detected one or more Office components on your computer. Removing these components is recommended and will not affect your existing data. Remove ALL old Office components now?
- Select "Yes". Your previous versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint, etc. will be uninstalled. Then the newer versions will be automatically installed. Follow the prompts on the screen. Always Reboot when asked!
- Restart your system to make sure that all updates to your files and registry are completed correctly.
A Custom Installation to keep earlier Version of Word and Excel
Following the steps above you will follow steps 1-3 the same way.
- When prompted for the installation folder select "Change Folder"
- Rename the Installation folder to "Office 2002"
- On the screen to select the install type, select "Custom"
- Enter Product ID
- The next screen displays this message:
The Microsoft Office Upgrade Wizard has detected one or more Office components on your computer. Removing these components is recommended and will not affect your existing data. Remove ALL old Office components now?
- Select "NO". The Installation Wizard will remove all previous versions if you select "Yes"!!
- Remove the check mark next to each application that should remain in the old version (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel)
- You will be prompted that the other applications will be overwritten.
- Select "OK"
- Click "Install Now"
- CAUTION!! - On your Start menu and the Desktop you cannot have two icons for the same Application. In other words, even though you have 2 different versions of Word, you can only have ONE icon for one version or the other but not both. This applies to ALL application icons
