When you upgrade to Office 97 or one of the Office 97 programs, you may find that the behavior of the Setup program differs from earlier versions of the Microsoft Office upgrade Setup program. This page discusses the upgrade process and how it works

A few words before we begin...
  • Microsoft states (and I concur) that installing and running multiple versions of Office on one system is NOT recommended. It CAN be done and operate correctly with certain applications.
  • Only ONE version of Outlook can run on any system. Period.
  • Only ONE version of Access should be run on any system. It is possible to run more than one version on any system but you WILL have problems, promise...
  • Same with Publisher (especially because of Clip Art issues!). You may not have any problems but do you want to bank on it?
  • Word and Excel will run concurrent with other versions if you choose.
  • Upgrading does NOT affect your data. All your files will still be there.
  • Make sure your system meets requirements by clicking the link below:

A Typical Installation

You will begin the installation upgrade in One of Two ways, by 1) Autorun or 2) by Browsing the CD and selecting the setup.exe executable file. My instructions will be using 1) Autorun.
I will also be giiving instructions for the Professional (PRO) version of Office 97.

  1. Insert the first disk, CD 1.
  2. It should start the setup window automatically, or "Autorun"
  3. Type in your Name, Company Name (if any), and Product ID when instructed. If you don't have a product ID, try this and see if it works - 01297-OEM-0123456
  4. Accept the default folder for installation. The file path is normally C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
  5. For installation type select "Typical"
  6. You should receive the following message:

The Microsoft Office Upgrade Wizard has detected one or more Office 4.x or 95 components on your computer. Removing these components is recommended and will not affect your existing data. Remove ALL old Office 4.x and 95 components now?

  7. Select "Yes". Your previous versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint, etc. will be uninstalled. Then the newer versions will be automatically installed. Follow the prompts on the screen. Always Reboot when asked!
  8. Restart your system to make sure that all updates to your files and registry are completed correctly.

A Custom Installation to keep earlier Version of Word and Excel

Following the steps above you will follow steps 1-3 the same way.
  1. When prompted for the installation folder select "Change Folder"
  2. Rename the Installation folder to "Office 97"
  3. On the screen to select the install type, select "Custom"
  4. Enter Product ID (see above for PID #)
  5. The next screen displays this message:

The Microsoft Office Upgrade Wizard has detected one or more Office 4.x or 95 components on your computer. Removing these components is recommended and will not affect your existing data. Remove ALL old Office 4.x and 95 components now?

  6. Select "NO". The Installation Wizard will remove all previous versions if you select "Yes"!!
  7. Uncheck Word and Excel and leave all other components checked off. click OK and you should upgrade all programs while the previous versions of Word and Excel remain.
  8. CAUTION!! - On your Start menu and the Desktop you cannot have two icons for the same Application. In other words, even though you have 2 different versions of Word, you can only have ONE icon for one version or the other but not both. This applies to ALL application icons.
